Secondary Research - Analyzing three music videos

For apart of my research in helping to produce and shoot a music video, I have decided to analyze three different parts in three different types of music videos, that relate to the theme of the music video of the song Demon Dogs (the performance arts students song) which is Love and relates to the possible environments that performing arts student want or could have.

The music videos I have decided to analyze is :

Glee

Dance with Somebody Music video

I chose dance with somebody by glee to analyze, simply because its a song that is about being energetic and wanting to do what the title of the song says '' Dance with Somebody''

I also chose this song to analyze, merely because it had some features in it that some of the performing arts students wanted in their music video, which was a variety of locations including a white wall.

The theme of this song is not all about love, in-fact you could say that half of it is about love and the other part having fun. The song introduces and shows people that want to dance, be hyped and just live life to the fullest. As the lyrics would say '' I wanna dance with somebody, I wanna feel the heat with somebody''

''with somebody who loves me'' - Introducing the love part of the song

At the start of the music video we see the main singer singing and the tempo starts to build and is at a quite moderate level, but it is still however a bit faster and upbeat than the original song.

In this scene they're good shots moving from different angles and views, showing the audience smiling and bobbing to the beat, showing theirs faces to show that the audience is having fun.

The main singer than starts to dance and the tempo is still at a moderate level, yet again showing shots of the audience cheering and having fun.....

But as soon as the beat drops her movements gets faster, as she begins to pull her friends in the audience and basically forces them to dance with her. At this rate the tempo has gone a little bit fast, and so does the transitions and angles showing each person going into the crowd and dancing along. After that, the scene then dramatically changes to a different environment a white wall, where another singer begins singing bits of the song, whilst wearing clothes that are old fashioned and similar to what females in the 90's would wear, she sings whilst studio lights appear to be flashing on top of them creating a back and front shadow over them. The choreography of them dancing is shot in various angles from a high angle to a medium angle and we also get shots again of her classmates cheering and watching her.

When analyzing parts of this video, I saw many nice features that I felt that if we added to the production of the music video, would be eye-catching and unique. Such as there was many bits in the music video where the shots were very fast and swift it made the music video appear more lively and energetic, watching this music video definitely lifted my sprits and that was because of the shots, as when people were being pulled up and practically forced to dance the shots were so linked with the movement that it made me feel like I was being pulled up and just made me want to get up and start dancing!

The 2nd video that I had decided to analyze was this video by the 1million dance studio

The song that they're dancing to relates to the theme of love, as in the english version of the song it just translate to a guy who likes this girl and he wants to spend time with her but the song you could say is more related to love experiences as an adult.

Its a choreography dance video of people dancing to the song '' All I wanna do by Jay Park'' I felt like analyzing this video would be helpful and beneficial even though its not a music video, as it relates yet again to what the performing arts student's want to see in their music video, which is a clear white background as one of their locations and a choreography in that room being recorded and shot of all of them.

At the start of the video we see a swirl effect being used showing and introducing Jay park into the video along with text being placed in front of him, showing the title of the song which is ''All I wanna do'' The camera then moves to the side whilst panning, resulting in the text being changed, this time it says the names of the people dancing and the word choreography underneath it, moving along down the room following Jay Park, giving us a medium shot of him and another dancer interacting with one another. Which further on pans out to show the other dancers that are in the same room of them, before this occurs, for the third time again the text then changes again saying the words ''with Jay Park'' including and leaving his name last to give him credit that he is also in the music video, after this the dancers then begin to dance and hit the beat of the intro of the song which makes the text disappear.

At this point they begin the choreography with the camera smoothly gliding and panning on Jay Park (who is wearing the blue jay's jersey) and his dance partner, trying to show that the main focus is on them whilst they are dancing. The camera then goes back and slowly pans out whilst they're dancing so that you are able to see all the dancers, dancing in the frame. When the dancers start doing their choreography that involves foot work the camera than zooms in, showing quite a medium shot of Jay park and another dancer, which yet again slowly transitions out to show a medium, then long shot of the other dancers performing.

When analyzing certain parts of this video you can see that the person or people that shot it really took into consideration of making sure to put attention on certain people, whilst also trying their best to make sure that all the dancers are included in the shot. Whenever the dancer's hit the beat when dancing you could notice that the camera movements always moved along that specific beat or movement that the dancers were doing, which made watching it more enjoyable, it made me feel like I was there watching them, as it give me a variety of shots and angles that I could look at, whilst watching their performance.

I feel like that if we as a team ( the performing arts students + our class) decided to get a variety of shots and pans it would make the music video look very pleasing and quite professional! So I hope next time we could perhaps contribute these ideas to the performing arts students and get some great shots that could be added to the final edit of our work.

The 3rd and music last video that I had decided to analyze was

Bop to the Top by Ashley Tisdale & Lucas Grabeel

High-school Musical

I chose this video to analyze because of the location that Sharpay and Ryan (the name of the characters) were in which is in a theatre, one of the locations that could be a good area, where we could get some good visuals and shots of them doing their choreography, especially since they will be scenes where they are duo's and trio's included.

At the start of the performance it is quite dramatic and comedic as Ryan comes into the theatre with a stage light being flashed on top of him and then Sharpay. She then walks into the theatre, with the camera shots going back and forth showing herself and her brother (Ryan) whilst they're walking up towards each other. We then see quite a long tilted shot of Sharpay and Ryan, which then transitions to a full frontal shot of both of them dancing and singing, when it comes to Ryan's part of his singing the camera angle then changes to a close up shot of Ryan pointing and singing loud, trying to show close up how passionate and proud he is about singing, this angle then quickly transitions to a medium shot of both them again dancing, trying their best to present themselves in a over-exaggerated manner, doing anything they can to ace their audition.

Overall .....

The mosts shots we see are medium, long shots and back shots!

Throughout the whole music we see a lot of medium to long shots which shows their costumes and dance moves, which overall helps to show the audience that they're being watched giving us also a POV angle as well. In the video we can clearly see the context which is an audition, we can see that they're being watched by a woman who gets to decide wether they get the role or not for the high school musical, which is why we see so many shots where we can see a back view, a medium, shot and a long shot to show this without having to tell us twice!

From analyzing this video, I feel that it did has some nice features, such as the close ups which was used to put emphasis on a specific characters emotions and the back shots, long shots and medium shots, which helped the viewers see the performers in all of their angles and views of their choreography. - Perhaps next time meeting the performing arts students we can discuss if we could add some of these shots in certain areas such as close up's especially when the duo's and trio's are dancing to capture their emotions and reactions.
