Dear diary,

Me and my classmates are going to get the opportunity to produce our own media company logo's, but before creating and designing our logos, it would be very much necessary to do research on what a media institute is and the ones that are popular and present in 2016. What I am going to be looking at today is the different types of media institutes out there and what they each try to do to gain an audience.

I will also be drafting and sketching some images of several different logos that I would want for my media institute. In order to get help on which logo is suitable, not only have I decided to analyze which one I like the best, I also thought it would be beneficial to get a response from the public, so I have decided that for this task I will be going to the members of public and asking them which logo they like the best. I really want the opinions of others, so my media company logo can be appealing not just to one audience but several.

Media institution

What is a media institution?

A media institution is a company and or organization that is responsible for producing ''media texts'' this can be divided through and in different types of categories such as

Marketing

Production Distribution

& Regulation

Here is an example of three media institutions and what their ideologies and values are

THE BBC - ACRONYM

The British Broadcasting Corporation

Logo : **BLACK AND WHITE // BLACK BORDER, BLACK WORDS AND A WHITE FRAME SURROUNDING THE LETTERS**

SLEEK AND LOGO IS QUITE SIMPLE.

Their mission and Values :

Copy and pasted from their website (Harvard referencing link is below)

Our mission, vision, and values inform the work of the BBC and are how we promote our public purposes.

The public purposes are set out by the Royal Charter and Agreement, the constitutional basis for the BBC.

Our mission

To enrich people's lives with programmes and services that inform, educate and entertain.

Our vision

To be the most creative organisation in the world.

Our values

  • Trust is the foundation of the BBC: we are independent, impartial and honest.

  • Audiences are at the heart of everything we do.

  • We take pride in delivering quality and value for money.

  • Creativity is the lifeblood of our organisation.

  • We respect each other and celebrate our diversity so that everyone can give their best.

  • We are one BBC: great things happen when we work together.

The Royal Charter and Agreement also sets out six public purposes for the BBC. See Public purposes.

The BBC is a media organization that had broadcasted a lot on television, they have several programs which me and family watch, which supports their ideologies and values. Because the BBC is a wide and broad broadcasting corporation it has loads of channels and sections that cater to everyone (relating to one of their values which is that ''audiences are at the heart of everything we do'')

You have the BBC NEWS

Which takes pride in broadcasting media news related, delivering news wethers its :

Educational related

Business

Politics

Technology

World

Science and just for entertainment purposes.

Attracting viewers that are more interested in seeing news that revolves around the world and ways it could impact society and their life's. (Mostly attracting older viewers and a mature audience)

You have BBC iplayer

Where you can watch anything on the BBC TV channels,

BBC ONE

BBC TWO

Ranging from real life documentaries, to soaps such as Eastenders. There is also a channel on BBC Iplayer called CBeebies which is a popular channel that is for younger viewers such as children. On the website once you click on the CBeebies tab you get an endless choices on what program you would be interested in watching. Meaning that they're loads of options in which people can watch regardless of your age.

Here is some of different types of programs you can watch once you're on the BBC iplayer page.

One documentary that had been created by members of the BBC had gained a huge amount of attention, which was about the Death of Mark Duggan. The documentary documents and reenacts the days in-which he was murdered by a Police officer who believed he had a weapon (but it was proven otherwise)

As soon as it came out on BBC it was trending on twitter with thousands of people paying their respects to Mark Duggan and demanding justice for him. His death will be forever remembered and was what sparked riots in 2011, still to this day his family has not gotten the justice they wanted.

It was all evident that this documentary was guaranteed to gain a lot of views, which it did, simply because people were intrigued about the whole situation and was engaged that the case was being re-examined. This supports the vision the BBC has, as it states that they want as a institute to

''To enrich people's lives with programmes and services that inform, educate and entertain''

Endemonal Shine North America

The next media institute I had decided to look at was Endemol Shine North America, which is a media institute that is affiliated with two other companies one being called Shine USA and the other being Reveille productions. At first Endemol Shine North America was originally named as Reveille Productions (founded by Ben Silverman in 2002). Reville Productions (before it turned into Endemol) was an independently operated motion picture studio and production company, that was situated in Los Angeles. It was only until March 2012 that Reville Productions Changed to Endemol Shine North America.

Here is a video of what the logo of Reveille Productions looked like before it merged with Endemol Shine North America.

Deconstruction of The Logo

More Background History: - Where Endemol Shine North America came from.

The brand Endemol was recognized as a Dutch based media company, that was known to create and distribute multi platform entertainment content. Producing media content that was either scripted or non scripted such as reality television and game shows.

The company Endemol had various partnerships around the world, such as what we see now Endemol USA which is the production brand of Endemol that is located in Los Angeles, California.

Here is their statement of how they represent themselves on the website

(copied and pasted) - Harvard referencing link below

About Endemol Shine North America

''Endemol Shine North America delivers world-class content and compelling storytelling to multiple platforms in the U.S. and across the globe. Endemol Shine North America is part of Endemol Shine Group, the global content creator, producer and distributor with a diverse portfolio of companies that are behind some of the most prominent hit television formats and series in the world''

Endemol Shine North America is a media institute that is very notable, it has formed and helped create shows such as the American version of Big brother.

Shows like the Biggest Loser where we get to see people challenging themselves to loose weight, and Master Chef which has been very popular - rating wise (due to Gordon Ramsay being the host)

I mainly picked this media institute to look at, simply because it was behind the creations of the series Ugly Betty, which is a series that I am quite fond off and had watched throughout my childhood. In many ways the show was very entertaining and very known by the public.

UGLY BETTY - 2006-2010

Brief description : Ugly betty is a series about a girl called Betty, as you can see from the title of the series she is described and labelled as being ugly, throughout the movie she yearns so hard to be pretty and to gain her dream job, which is to be an editor in chief of a magazine, but she has to start from some where.

At first she applies to be the assistant of Daniel Meade who is the editor in chief of a magazine called Mode. She gets turned down because she is unattractive and Daniel Meade tends to hire good looking females that he can sleep with, luckily Daniel Meade's father hires Betty to avoid his son from sleeping with another assistant.

This leads to Betty starting from the bottom but having some difficulties, as her boss Daniel wants to get her fired, so he can replace her with a hot model that he can hook up with. Overall this show reached a high amount of popularity during the days that it was produced and being streamed on ABC.

the ratings the show had received (below)

With millions of people watching the show because it was enjoyable and a show that people could really watch for escapism. (they could believe that they relate to the character Betty) - who was seen as ugly and clumsy.

↓↓

Endemol Shine North America is a media institute that certainly knows how to engage an audience through producing media content that ensures that people are entertained throughout. Which is why they produce so many shows that will relate to people such as the show Biggest Loser - ( seeing overweight people trying to loose weight) - Which could relate to some viewers who have had troubles with their weight.

Creating shows such as The American Big Brother, which allows viewers to watch people complete tasks and witness the drama the housemates faces, intriguing people to watch, simply because the drama and the way the housemates acts could be appealing to them (especially if conflicted is involved in the house, it could amuse them)

NETFLIX

The last media institute I had decided to do research on is Netflix.

Brief Information about Netflix :

''Netflix is an American multinational entertainment company that was founded on August 29th 1997 in Scotts Valley California By Reed Hashings and Marc Randolph''

↑↑

Taken from the Netflix Wikipedia Page

I chose Netflix to do research on, merely because its been the talk among a lot of teenagers especially those that are in my class. Netflix is a very well liked institute, because of the media services it gives to people. It allows people with a small subscription fee monthly to watch movies and series unlimitedly.

The movies and series provided are of good quality and the majority of them that are streamed engage a huge audience.

Below is their mission statement and values

↓↓

The Mission Statement, Vision, Promise and Values of Netflix: "Our core strategy is to grow our streaming subscription business domestically and globally. We are continuously improving the customer experience, with a focus on expanding our streaming content, enhancing our user interface and extending our streaming service to even more Internet-connected devices, while staying within the parameters of our consolidated net income and operating segment contribution profit targets."

Overall Netflix has became quite a notable media institute that is known to stream content, wether its non-fiction or fictional. The institute even produces their own shows and movies and we can see this as some of their content will say this show is a Netflix original. Most of the shows that are streamed on their website (Netflix.com)

For the example the series the Orange is the new black

Brief Description :

Orange is the new black is a Netflix original series which was created by Jenji Kohan and produced by Titled productions along with Lionsgates television. The series shows the life of a 30 year old woman called Piper who lives in New York City who gets sentenced to 15 months in Litchfield Penitentiary, because she was caught smuggling drugs (10 years ago) with her Girlfriend Alex Vause who is an international drug lord. Because of this offense she suffers problems with her now fiance and friends.

She later gets reunited with her ex-girlfriend in prison and the rest is history.

After 1 week of being streamed it received more viewers and a bigger audience compared to the other popular Netflix original shows - House of cards and Arrested development.

Genre : American Comedy-Drama

The series accumulated 12 primetime emmy award nominations, including one for Outstanding comedy series, Outstanding writing for a comedy series and outstanding directing and this was just because of their first season!

When they third season was being streamed Orange is the new black won even more awards than its first season. The series won screen actors guild awards for Outstanding performance by an ensemble in a comedy series and also Outstanding performance by a female actor in a comedy series.

Here is the other nominations they had and the awards they had received.

Nominations :

Golden globe award nomination

For best television series

Five Satellite awards

GLAAD media award

An american cinema editors award

Producers guild of america award

Writers guild of american award

Peabody award

So, overall this series had gained a lot of positive recognition and attention, with people stating that this series is good as it helps showcase that prisoners are humans to and for making the cast diverse - with different body types, sexuality's and genders (including a transgendered woman in the show)

Genre : American Crime Web Series

Another show that had gained a lot of popularity on Netflix was the show Narcos which shows the life of the famous and notable drug lord Pablo Escobar. This series was bound to gain a huge viewing, simply because its based on a very well-known person. They're many people that will be intrested and intrigued to find out the life of Pablo Escobar before he was assassinated. You could say that some-how Narcos and Orange is the new black is some-what alike, as they're both based on people's experiences. Orange is the new black is based on a real situatition which occurred to someone called Piper Kerman the same name as the lead girl in the series.

The web series Narcos had received various of nominations, but hasn't won any, despite this the series is still popular and gains a huge viewing to this day. - It was hard to find the actual numbers of ratings but many articles have said otherwise.

↓↓

Last but not least I thought it was necessary to look at the show House of Cards,

another popular show that had been streamed on Netflix.

HAS RECIEVED 33 PRIMETIME EMMY AWARDS NOMINATIONS

OUTSTANDING DRAMA SERIES

OUTSTANDING LEAD ACTOR

OUTSTANDING LEAD ACTRESS

THE SHOW ALSO EARNED EIGHT

GOLDEN GLOBE AWARD NOMINATIONS.

Genre : Political American Drama

Brief Description : House of Cards is a Political American drama web television series that was created by Beau Willimon. The series is based on the novel by Michael Dobbs.

The series is set in Washington D.C and follows the life of a man called Frank Underwood ( a democrat who comes from the South California's 5th District) Throughout the series he tries to form a idea to higher his status and to get into a more monumental and greater position of power.

At the start of the first episode we see Frank or Francis Underwood showing his cruel goal of killing a weak pet dog with his bare hands. He does it to show the audience how that in life they're some things we have to do even if it is cruel or not right to do. - Which is what he does to try and get to the top.

The most common themes that are presented in this series is

Manipulation

Power

and Pragmatism

This show gained loads of viewers and recognition because it introduced to people to politics in a controversial way. It entertained people by showing them what appears to be the dark side of politics even if it is acting. Showing the life of a man who strives to be the most powerful man. This series was viewed so much that Netflix said that the show is coming back in 2017 for its fifth season. In total the show has 4 seasons!

Below is the type of ratings they got - unfortunately I did not find the exact numbers but this article was useful.

So, overall Netflix does know how to engage an audience, by creating and forming unique series's that are bound to have viewers watching at any minute. This is the type of media institute I hope to be like. As they are very aware of what people want to watch and end up creating series that are nominated for vast and well recognized awards.
